MGS at Luther MI

When the MGS was at Meijer Gardens in 2012 we were contacted by a lady from Luther MI who asked if we would have a speaker come to one of their meetings.  Finally Julie Glover was able to join up with the ladies at their Tea Party that was held at the Lion's Club - the gentlemen from the Lions were kind enough to don aprons and serve the tea!  Julie had a display set up and was made most welcome.  Enjoy the photos - first of the calligraphied announcement at each setting, then the display, a snowman gourd and of course she couldn't resist taking of the guys getting the teapots ready!  Thanks for a job well done Julie.
As always, the MGS is happy to have members represent us at various events and our speakers have always done an excellent job representing the Michigan Gourd Society!

ROCKFORD HARVEST FESTIVAL

The Harvest Fest in Rockford was the weekend after the Meijer show. Sharon Berg had a tented booth set up on Sat and Bobbie Lee was there with her. Together they talked to the passers-by about the different tools used in cleaning and preparing the gourds, different techniques used. Sharon demonstrated wood carving and how to inlay jewels while Bobbie was wood burning tangles on her gourds. Since they were showing demo's the $50 both fee was waived. Bobbie sold 4 of her pieces and was thrilled, this was her first sale of a gourd she had made. Sharon also sold some fall themed gourds and could have sold more if we  accepted credit cards. Along with their gourds for sale they had a table displaying all the various tools and paints used and a sampling of the different type of gourds there are.  The people were very receptive, most walked through the tent and were amazed at all the unique gourds for sale. All in all it was a good day.

SEPTEMBER meeting at Jackson Library, we only had two members ... so  we did what ever we wanted. Carrie did air dry clay faces on penguin gourds, and I, LuAnn, did a philodendron sheath on a gourd, and painted an apple gourd red, with the new Milk paint powder I bought.
OCTOBER meeting was  canceled, do to illnesses and busy schedules.
NOVEMBER  9th is scheduled, and we're not yet set on what technique we are doing but check back for more information on that.   We are hoping that Bobbie is definitely going to teach us Zentangling -  so stay tuned for an update on that and on what supplies she wants us to bring along.

GRAND GOURDS PATCH

The gourd group in Rockford took a break from gourds at this months meeting and went back to the drawing board so to speak. Bobbie Lee a MSG member took her micron pens, pencils, paper, and a whole mess of tangles to the class to teach about the art of zentangle. There were about a dozen ladies with pen in hand doing tangles "one stroke at a time".After about 4 1/2 hours they had several tangles under their belt. A few ladies had a gourd or two that they had done tangle patterns on. We discussed making a gourd "quilt" with everyone doing a different tangle on it then donating it to a good cause to raffle off. The pictures shown are Bobbie's, 3 bracelets with a separate tangling on each inside and out (por fin, merryweather, and fiore are the names of the tangles used). The maranka gourd with over 50 different tangles wood burned on it. Bobbie will be teaching another gourd group the zentangle method up in Jackson on the 9th. Good job ladies looking forward to seeing what you've learned and applying it to our beloved gourds.
Peace Love and Gourding

Gourds at Meijer Gardens 2013

The weekend at Meijer Gardens was deemed a success!
We had lots of gourds on display to show of the many techniques that our members use and we also had gourds from different countries to help people visualize what people do in different parts of the world.
Attendance was not as high as in previous years but Meijers told us that was the case all the weekend for everyone.  People were just waiting to tourd Grand Rapids when Art Prize started up later on.
Usually we have demos scheduled every other hour, on the hour, in a classroom down the hall but we tried something new this year.  We had a demo table inside the show room and for gourd cleaning, drilling and other "messy" or "dusty" techniques we had space out on the patio right outside the show room.  Visitors could ask to see a technique that piqued their interest and one of our volunteers would show that right then and there - no need to have to wait for a scheduled time!  That seemed to go over well.
Also drawing attention was the childrens table where kids could come and make themselves a pin or necklace out of gourds.  Always a hit!
At the Annual Meeting we will have discussion on how to improve things and discuss what to do next year.
COME AND ADD YOUR IDEAS!
