Minutes of MGS Annual Meeting in Lansing
On November 16, 2013 at PF Changs.
Those present were : Charlie and Rita Heller, Charles and Jan Rogers, Tammy Braunscheidel, Bobbie Smith, Sharon Berg, Liduina Fedewa, Barb Buck, Andrea Thornton, Kathy Priest and Dee Jones.
After introductions, visiting and a great lunch at PF Changs the meeting was started. Tammy reported on the Meijers Garden show. Attendance was down this year, but the show ran smoothly, and the kids table was again a big hit this year. Demonstrations of wood burning, colored pencils, egg shells, and the making of rain sticks were done by our members. Twelve of our MGS ladies helped run the booths and talked with people. Eight people sold gourds for a total of $342.00.
Tammy also spoke about the show at the Botantical Gardens in Ann Arbor. Not enough volunteered to work this show, so we had to cancel. This would be a nice educational opportunity for the MGS as there is no charge for tables, and if people want to sell their gourds there is no cost involved. Tammy urged members to please think about this for next year . It involves a Saturday and Sunday, but you could bring your camper to stay in or it might be possible to stay with Tammy.
Bobbie Smith mentioned that she will check on the Flywheelers show in South Haven for next year. This is in September. She will get information to see if people are interested in selling their gourds. There is a table charge.
Charlie Heller mentioned that Kalamazoo has a big craft show at Wings Stadium if people want to check it out. He did not have a lot of information, so you would have to check it out online. There will be a fee for that show.
Patch Reports: Bobbie reported that Rockford has a monthly meeting, usually on a Weds. At Joanne Peltz house. Some of the things they have done is pine needle rims, Zentangle, etc., also just working on their gourds together.
Andrea reported that St.Johns meets every other Friday. Usually they have 5 or 6 people. She started people from the bottom up with growing, cleaning, and decorating.
Tammy reported that Rita needs some relief from some of her responsibilities, as she has been doing so much for the MGS for a long time. Tammy ask for volunteers to handle some jobs. Sharon Berg volunteered to do the newsletter on a quarterly basis. Some of the suggestions would be tutorials on how to do a certain project, tips and shortcuts to make things easier. Members also want to see pictures of gourds and projects. The next newsletter will go out to members, hopefully the second week of December. If you have pictures, news, or information about members, or things you are working on, please email me.
Jan Rogers with the help of Charles will be Membership Secretary as well as the new Treasurer. MGS will also have a facebook page.
Gourding Weekend. Members wanted to have a gourding weekend where we could have members teach different techniques and projects. Tammy will check with Somerset Beach Campground in Jackson. Sharon will check with Margo Bowden of Newaygo, to see what is available there for the spring, possibly sometime in June. Hopefully, we will have information for the Dec. and April newsletter.
There was no treasurers report available, but Rita stated that we have around $500 available. Some of this could be used for the gourding weekend. The meeting was adjourned.
Sharon also reported that one of our members, Pat Corson, of Middleville passed away sometime in October.
