Our day in Blanchard

Blanchard Victorian Festival has come and gone, but Bobbie and Rita won't soon forget that wonderful day.
We were greeted by Martha, and those who were helping her, and shown to our location - right on main street at the center of the event!  Two covered sites with tables were provided for us and they had cleaned gourds on hand for birdhouses!  Amazing.  As always, it is the people who really make our time at events such a pleasure and this was no exception.  Wonderful small-town hospitality for sure.   Martha (event co-ordinator) had special foods cooked just for the vendors - even a keg of root beer and lots of water available.  Never had encountered that before.
The gourds we had were greatly admired and we fielded many questions.  The big hits were the musical instruments and every single one was picked up, tried out and thoroughly enjoyed!  The thunder drums were probably the biggest thrill for people - and you should have seen the jaws dropped every time they heard them!  The Water Drums were tried out - over and over and over again by both adults and children of all ages!  We didn't have time to teach any classes or do demos as we were talking the whole time - both of us managed to get away from the booth a couple of times but never for more than 5 minutes at a time - we were busy!
We look forward to returning and meeting up with our new friends and making more at their next festival!   Now - we turn around and get ready for the Flywheelers the first weekend of September.
COME AND SHARE YOUR TALENTS AND GIVE OTHERS A GLIMPSE INTO THIS WONDERFUL WORLD OF GOURDS!

The first day at the Botanical Gardens was great.  Good weather and nice setup.  Tammy (President of MGS) and Sharon (Secretary) were both there today and found that the students had started ornamental gourd seeds and had them for sale - a nice compliment to our presentation for sure.  Look for an update after Sunday and see what happened when Jan (Treasurer) joined in the festivities!  Enjoy the photos that tell the story about the gourd plants - nice looking little plants in the background!

We now have Bobbie Lee as out Interim VP for the MGS.  Thanks to Bobbie for stepping up to help us out until the next elections.   Many of you have already known of Bobbie's enthusiasm for the gourd world and she has taught several techniques to both Jackson and Grand Gourd Patches and attends their meetings,  driving from the snow country of Covert on Lake Michigan in some wild weather over the winter months!    Bobbie helped out at Meijer Gardens last year by doing demos and talking to the visitors who came thru - her energy seems boundless and we look forward to all of you meeting up with her soon.

Gourd Sightings!

The President of Argentina presented the newly elected Pope Francis with a Yerba Mate Gourd and he is shown with her in the one photo - fancy one for sure. Then the next one I saw was when he was caught out and about at night in the streets with the homeless - his yerba mate gourd in hand! Apparently he sneaks out of the Vatican to hand out food to the homeless some nights just dressed as a regular priest - no fancy stuff, no big shot following along etc. This man of God is something else apparently - instead of having a fancy big party with the dignitaries and all the pomp he invited homeless people and their dog in to a party with just them and his staff! He was also photographed in both prisons for men and women. That he is quietly doing good things - and loves his gourds - makes him special in my book!
Cheers - Rita in Kalamazoo MI
